What Gloucester County water is like
Gloucester County is the most mixed county we serve. It runs from Delaware River
industrial towns through fast-growing suburbs into Pinelands farm country, and the
water changes every ten miles.
The suburban middle — Washington Township, Deptford, Monroe, Glassboro, Mantua,
Harrison, East Greenwich, West Deptford — is mostly municipal. Those homeowners call

Why Gloucester County water needs the right system, not a package
Gloucester County sits on the inner and middle Coastal Plain. Public supply comes
largely from the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer system in the west and north, while

Frequently asked questions
I live in Washington Township on city water. What do I actually need?
Usually much less than a well owner. The common upgrades are whole-house carbon for chlorine taste and odor, a correctly sized softener if hardness is scaling your water heater, and reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink. We test at your tap first so you do not buy equipment you do not need.
Why does Franklin Township well water stain fixtures and smell like eggs?
That combination is dissolved iron plus hydrogen sulfide, common in the sandy Kirkwood-Cohansey wells of eastern and southern Gloucester County. Both need an oxidation step — air, chlorine, or ozone injection — followed by filtration, and acidic low pH should be corrected first or the rest of the system corrodes.
Is nitrate a real concern in rural Gloucester County?
Yes, in agricultural areas with shallow wells. Nitrate is colorless and odorless, so testing is the only way to know, and it matters most for infants under six months and pregnant women. Softeners and carbon filters do not remove it; reverse osmosis or anion exchange does.
What about PFAS in Gloucester County water?
New Jersey has some of the strictest PFAS drinking-water standards in the country, and public systems monitor, treat, and publish results. On a private well, PFAS is not part of a standard panel and has to be requested specifically. Point-of-use reverse osmosis is an effective residential barrier.
