What Salem County water is like
Salem County is the most rural county we serve and the one where private wells and
farming define the water. There is no large regional utility covering most of it, so a
majority of homes outside Salem City, Penns Grove, Pennsville, and Carneys Point are on
their own well — and that makes testing, not guessing, the starting point.
Nitrate is the defining Salem County problem. This is working farm country —
row crops, orchards, nurseries, dairy and poultry operations — and shallow wells in
sandy or loamy soil downgradient of fertilized fields, manure storage, or older septic
systems are the wells that come back high. Nitrate has no taste, color, or smell, so
nothing about your water tells you it is there. It is the one contaminant with a clear
acute risk, to infants under six months and pregnant women, and neither a softener nor a
carbon filter touches it. Reverse osmosis, anion exchange, or distillation is required.
Iron and manganese are close behind: orange staining in toilets and laundry, black
specks in aerators, metallic taste. Hardness is more common here than in the
Pinelands, especially in wells drawing from the deeper Potomac-Raritan-Magothy sands in
the western half of the county, so softeners actually earn their keep in Salem County
more often than in Burlington or Atlantic. In the southeastern corner — Pittsgrove and
Upper Pittsgrove, on the Pinelands fringe — the profile flips toward the familiar
acidic low-pH, soft, iron-bearing water and acid neutralizers.
Along the Delaware Bay and the tidal creeks — Elsinboro, Lower Alloways Creek,
Mannington, and the marsh side of Pennsville — shallow groundwater can carry elevated
sodium and chloride from brackish surface influence, which shows up as a salty or
mineral taste. Bacteria hits are also more frequent in the county because so many
wells are older, shallower, and closer to agricultural surface activity.
Why Salem County water needs the right system, not a package
Salem County sits on the New Jersey Coastal Plain, where the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy
aquifer system supplies most of the western county and the sandy Kirkwood-Cohansey
system reaches into the Pittsgrove area in the southeast. Tidal marsh and clay deposits
line the Delaware Bay shore. Farm land use sits directly over recharge areas, which is
the geologic reason nitrate is so persistent here.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my Salem County well has nitrate?
Only by testing. Nitrate is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. Any well in farm country should be tested annually for nitrate and bacteria, and immediately if there is an infant or a pregnant woman in the home. Our in-home analysis is free and we can send a certified lab panel.
Will a water softener remove nitrate from my well water?
No. Softeners exchange hardness minerals and do nothing for nitrate, and carbon filters do not remove it either. The effective options are point-of-use reverse osmosis for drinking and cooking water, anion exchange for whole-house reduction, or distillation. We size it to your test results.
Is Salem County water hard or soft?
Both, depending on where you are. Wells in the western county drawing from deeper Coastal Plain sands are often genuinely hard and benefit from softening, while wells on the Pinelands fringe in Pittsgrove and Upper Pittsgrove tend to be soft and acidic and need pH correction instead. That is why we test before quoting.
My water tastes salty near the bay. What causes that?
Shallow wells close to the Delaware Bay and its tidal creeks can pick up elevated sodium and chloride from brackish surface influence. Softening will not fix a salt taste — it adds sodium. Reverse osmosis is the practical residential answer.
How often should a farm well be tested?
At least annually for bacteria and nitrate, with a broader panel every three to five years and any time taste, smell, or clarity changes. New Jersey’s Private Well Testing Act also requires testing at the time of a home sale, and we handle those samples routinely.
