What Burlington County water is like

Burlington County is the largest county in New Jersey by land area, and its water
changes as you move from the Delaware River towns east into the Pinelands.

In the Pinelands half — Tabernacle, Shamong, Woodland, and the eastern parts of
Pemberton and Southampton — wells draw from sandy Kirkwood-Cohansey material. The
water is naturally acidic, often pH 4.5 to 6.0, and low in dissolved minerals. Low
pH is corrosive: pinhole leaks in copper lines, blue-green staining in tubs and sinks,
short water-heater life. It is the top reason we install acid neutralizers here.

Iron and manganese come next. Because the same well is acidic, the iron stays
dissolved — water looks clear at the tap and stains toilets and laundry orange hours
later. Manganese leaves black specks and gray film.

Well testing in the county also turns up naturally elevated gross alpha and radium
in parts of the Pinelands, nitrate in the farm belt around Chesterfield,
Springfield, and North Hanover, sulfur odor in some deeper wells, and occasional
coliform bacteria after wet weather or in older casings.

Western Burlington — Moorestown, Cinnaminson, Delran, Maple Shade, Willingboro, Mount
Laurel, Burlington Township — is largely municipal. Those homes rarely need iron
removal, but they do call about chlorine and chloramine taste and odor, moderate
hardness, and drinking water in older housing with aging service lines. Whole-house

Why Burlington County water needs the right system, not a package

the Pinelands National Reserve over the sandy, permeable Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer,

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Burlington County well water leave blue-green stains?

That is acidic, low-pH water dissolving copper out of your plumbing — very common on Pinelands wells in eastern Burlington County. The fix is an acid neutralizer, usually a calcite bed or soda ash injection, installed ahead of any filter or softener. Left alone, low pH causes pinhole leaks.

Do I need a softener if my Pinelands well water is already soft?

Usually not. Pinelands groundwater here is naturally soft, so those wells need pH correction and iron or manganese removal instead. Homes on municipal water in western Burlington County are the opposite case and often do benefit from softening.

How much iron is too much in well water?

Staining generally starts near 0.3 mg/L of iron and about 0.05 mg/L of manganese, and many Burlington County wells test well above both. Above those levels you need an oxidizing iron filter; iron combined with sulfur usually needs air, chlorine, or ozone injection ahead of it.

I am on city water in Moorestown or Mount Laurel. Do I still need filtration?
