What Atlantic County water is like
Atlantic County is Pinelands country inland and barrier-island coast on the water, and
both ends create real treatment problems.
Inland — Hammonton, Mullica, Buena Vista, Folsom, Egg Harbor City, Galloway, and the
Mays Landing side of Hamilton Township — wells draw from the sandy Kirkwood-Cohansey
aquifer. The signature is naturally acidic water, often pH 4.5 to 6.0, paired with
high dissolved iron and frequently manganese. Homeowners describe water that
looks clear at the tap and leaves rust-orange rings in the toilet a day later, black
flecks in aerators, and dingy laundry. The low pH does the quieter damage: pinhole
leaks in copper and premature fixture and water-heater failure.
Sulfur is the third recurring complaint. Hydrogen sulfide gives that rotten-egg
smell, strongest in hot water, and it usually travels with iron — which means an
oxidation step (air injection, chlorine, or ozone) ahead of filtration, not a
cartridge.
Agricultural Atlantic County adds nitrate risk. Hammonton and the surrounding farm
belt is intensively farmed, and shallow wells in sandy soil near fields or older
septics are exactly the wells that test high. Nitrate is not removed by carbon or
softening; it takes reverse osmosis or anion exchange.
Near the shore — Absecon, Northfield, Linwood, Somers Point, Pleasantville, Atlantic
City, Ventnor, Margate, Brigantine — homes are almost entirely on municipal water, so

Why Atlantic County water needs the right system, not a package
Most of Atlantic County lies inside the Pinelands National Reserve on the Coastal
Plain, over the unconfined Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer, with deeper confined aquifers
(the Atlantic City 800-foot sand, Piney Point) serving larger public systems. Sandy
soil offers almost no natural buffering, which is exactly why the water is soft,
acidic, and iron-bearing.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my Hammonton or Mullica well water staining everything orange?
Dissolved iron. Kirkwood-Cohansey wells inland commonly test well above the 0.3 mg/L staining threshold, and because the water is acidic the iron stays dissolved until it meets air. The fix is an oxidizing iron filter, with an air, chlorine, or ozone stage ahead of it when sulfur or manganese is present.
My well water smells like rotten eggs. Is it dangerous?
The smell is hydrogen sulfide gas. At levels found in South Jersey wells it is a nuisance and corrosion problem rather than an emergency, but it ruins taste and attacks metal. Treatment is oxidation followed by filtration; a carbon cartridge alone is overwhelmed within weeks.
Should I test for nitrate if I live near a Hammonton farm?
Yes. Shallow wells in sandy soil near active agriculture or older septic systems are the classic high-nitrate wells here. Nitrate has no taste or smell and matters most for infants under six months and pregnant women. Softeners and carbon do not remove it; reverse osmosis or anion exchange does.
Do shore-town homes in Atlantic County need treatment?
Different problems, same starting point. Those towns are on municipal water, so the issues are chlorine taste and odor, hardness and scale, and drinking-water quality. Whole-house carbon plus reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink covers most of it.
Is saltwater intrusion a problem in Atlantic County?
